Issuers of securities need LEI code

04.03.2024

Issuers of book-entry securities have to deliver valid LEI code to Centrálny depozitár cenných papierov SR, a.s. (CDCP SR).

In accordance with the amendment of REGULATION (EU) 2023/2845 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 13 December 2023 amending Regulation (EU) No 909/2014 as regards settlement discipline, cross-border provision of services, supervisory cooperation, provision of banking type ancillary services and requirements for third country central securities depositories and amending Regulation (EU) No. 236/2012, with effect from 15 March 2024, CDCP SR will require all issuers of book-entry securities to obtain a valid Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) and deliver it to CDCP SR.

In Slovakia, the LEI codes are allocated by Centrálny depozitár cenných papierov SR, a.s. Allocated LEI ensures unique world-wide identification of entities and high quality of reference data.

Pursuant to the Regulation, a valid LEI code will be used as an issuer identifier in the records kept by the central depository on provided services and activities performed in accordance with the requirements of the Regulation. The LEI code is also used by the European regulators for supervision of proper reporting by financial services firms and to aggregate data from multiple markets.

Entities obliged to use the LEI code, or that are interested in being assigned a LEI code for another reason, can place an application to CDCP SR via dedicated website lei.cdcp.sk. The website provides clients with information and services related to allocation and management of LEI codes in a clear manner (lei.cdcp.sk). All services for LEI codes offered by CDCP SR are provided fully electronically via the website.

The LEI is standardised 20-character, alpha-numeric code, which detailed structure is laid down by the international standard (ISO 17442). It enables accurate, unique and clear identification of legal entities globally. Importance of the LEI code consists in excluding situation that two different entities have allocated same identifier, or that one entity has two different codes.

On 30 January 2018 Centrálny depozitár cenných papierov SR, a.s. obtained from the GLEIF (Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation) the certificate demonstrating successful accreditation of CDCP SR for allocation of LEI codes to entities from Slovak or Czech jurisdiction.
